Berliner Hütte

The Berliner Hütte stands in the Zillertaler Alps of Austrian Tirol, at 2,042 metres above sea level in the Zemmgrund valley. It is a Category I Alpine Club hut run by the Berlin section of the German Alpine Association. With more than 180 beds in rooms and dormitories, it is the largest shelter of its kind in the range. The building itself has been a listed monument since 1997 and was the first in Austria to receive this status. When opened in 1879 it stood close to the snouts of the Hornkees and Waxeggkees glaciers, which then met nearby. Today the hut overlooks a high alpine landscape of peaks above 3,000 metres and the Schwarzsee lake on the Berliner Höhenweg trail. The hut is worth reaching because it anchors long-distance routes and classic ascents. It is an official stage on the 70-kilometre Berliner Höhenweg, which crosses the main ridge and links several huts. The route to the Furtschaglhaus from the west crosses the Schönbichler Horn at 3,133 metres, the highest point of the trail. To the east the path drops to the Schwarzensee and then climbs the Northern Mörchenscharte before continuing to the Greizer Hütte. From the hut it is also possible to descend through the Gunggl valley to Ginzling, a demanding six- to seven-hour route. The surrounding peaks include the Turnerkamp at 3,418 metres and the Great Möseler at 3,480 metres, both six to seven hours away. Inside, visitors find dormitory rooms and a communal dining area arranged around a central kitchen. Outside, the terrain shows clear signs of past glaciation: smooth granite slabs polished by ice movement lie south of the building, while blocks up to five metres across bear scars where the glacier tore away projecting edges. The hut also sits on the boundary between hard Central Gneiss and softer schist, a geological feature that shapes the steep faces of the surrounding summits. Minerals such as garnet crystals once drew prospectors to the area, and quartz varieties still attract collectors today.
