Stadtmuseum Camburg

The Stadtmuseum Camburg sits in the Amtshof at 1, a former count’s administration building raised in 1742 on the oldest settled ground of the town. After the castle was destroyed in 1451 the site became the Office, seat of local government, and in 1949 it opened as a museum whose roots go back to 1910 when a teacher named Türk began collecting objects from the region. One original prison cell from the building’s days as an official seat remains to be seen. The displays are divided into three main rooms. The earliest history room holds stone tools from the Neolithic, decorated urns, hand mills, weapons and other finds that show how densely this area was settled. The urban history room shows everyday objects from the late Middle Ages to the mid-19th century, including coloured copies of the 1674 Description of the princely-Saxon district—the oldest pictures of the town—and a 1585 law code for citizens. Uniforms, muskets and a Prussian military chest from 1806 recall the Napoleonic Wars, while craft traditions are represented by wooden and metal wares, guild chests, tin and copper vessels, blue-printed pottery and rural furniture. The final room is a reconstruction of an 1890 inn with a musical clock that marks Camburg’s long brewing tradition. A working bookbinding workshop, shoemaker’s bench and tools of the wheelwright show how trades were practised over centuries. The tour ends in a prison cell last used in 1953, a reminder of the building’s dual role as both civic centre and place of confinement.
