Burg Camburg

The Burg Camburg stands on a long, narrow ridge above the Saale valley in Camburg, a small town in eastern Thüringen. The hill is split by a deep ditch now carrying the main road, leaving two separate parts: the lower ward where the tower still rises, and the upper ward marked by a high earth bank. The ridge runs north to south for about 285 metres, rising steeply above the river plain. The site matters because it was a key crossing point on the medieval salt route from Sulza to Naumburg, watched over by Wettin margraves from the 12th century. A chapel appears in records from 1213, and the tower itself probably dates from the late 12th or early 13th century. After fierce fighting in 1191 and later sieges, the castle was finally destroyed in 1450 and left as a ruin. Only the Bergfried and scraps of wall remain, yet these tell the story of a power struggle among Wettins, bishops and local nobles. Visitors climb the 37-metre tower for wide views over the Saale valley and the surrounding farmland. The lower ward holds the remains of the curtain wall and a small L-shaped building with a cellar found during 1935 works. Nearby, the tall earth rampart of the upper ward shows where the original stronghold once stood. A modern standesamt occupies one of the surviving structures, and the whole ridge is laid out as a park with paths along the old walls.
