Foveran Castle

Foveran Castle, also known as Turing’s Tower, was a medieval fortress built in the 12th or 13th century. It stood in Aberdeenshire, about seven kilometres south-east of Ellon and a short distance from the mouth of the River Ythan. The castle belonged to the Turing family for centuries before collapsing around 1720. Later, the Forbes of Tolquhoun took ownership in the mid-18th century. Today, no visible remains of the structure can be found on the site. The castle’s most enduring feature was an arch over a spring, believed to have been part of its northern wall. This arch survived until 1866, long after the main building had crumbled. Local tradition links the castle’s fall to a prophecy by Thomas the Rhymer, which foretold events tied to the Battle of Prestonpans. The rhyme suggests that when Turing’s Tower fell, Gladsmuir would soon follow in significance. Visitors to the area will find open farmland where the castle once stood. The nearest landmark is Foveran House Hotel, just 75 metres away. The site offers no ruins to explore, but the surrounding countryside provides quiet walks along the River Ythan. The flat terrain and coastal proximity make it a peaceful spot for reflection on history.
