Sands of Forvie

The Sands of Forvie lie north of Newburgh in Aberdeenshire, where the River Ythan meets the North Sea. The site forms part of a national nature reserve managed by NatureScot and includes the fifth largest sand dune system in Britain. These dunes sit within the Ythan Estuary, separated from Balmedie beach by shifting sands. The reserve also protects the least disturbed dunes in the country, shaped by wind and waves since the last ice age. Forvie once held Scotland’s largest eider duck colony, though numbers have fallen sharply since 2006. The area is internationally important for terns and seals, with both common and grey seals hauled out on the beaches. The reserve is recognised as a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation under Natura 2000. It holds a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is a Category II protected area by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The dunes reach up to 20 metres high and shift constantly, resembling a miniature desert. Four tern species nest among the marram grass, while wigeon, geese and other migratory birds use the estuary in winter. The cliffs in the north host seabirds such as fulmars and kittiwakes, and raptors like buzzards and ospreys hunt overhead. Grey and harbour seals gather in growing numbers, protected as a designated haul-out site. Visitors walk along sandy paths that cross mobile dunes and stabilised grasslands. The southern spit marks where the Ythan flows into the sea, while raised beaches and rock terraces appear further north. Marram grass, crowberry and creeping willow grow on the dunes, alongside rare plants like sea kale and Scottish primrose. The estuary’s mudflats attract thousands of geese each spring, and otters and bottlenose dolphins appear offshore. The remains of Forvie village, buried under drifting sand centuries ago, lie hidden beneath the dunes.
