Hakkasan

Hakkasan is a Cantonese restaurant in the City of Westminster, London. It opened in 2001 by Alan Yau, who also founded Wagamama. The restaurant serves modern Cantonese dishes with a Western upscale dining style. Its first location was at Hanway Place, designed by French designer Christian Liaigre. The interior mixes modern and traditional Chinese motifs, including a carved wooden cage as dining space. A second London restaurant opened in Mayfair in 2010, covering two floors for up to 220 guests. Hakkasan gained its first Michelin star in 2003, becoming the first Chinese restaurant in Britain to earn one. It was ranked in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list from 2004 to 2009, reaching 14th place in 2004. The Hanway Place location closed in 2025 after 24 years, but the Mayfair branch remains open. The group expanded to 61 venues in 22 markets by 2020 before many closures during the pandemic. Tao Group Hospitality later acquired Hakkasan in 2021. Visitors to the Mayfair restaurant find an elegant dining space with modern Chinese design. The Bruton Street location seats up to 220 guests across two floors. The Hanway Place site had a distinctive interior with a carved wooden cage as part of its design. The restaurant’s reputation comes from its high-end Cantonese cuisine and stylish atmosphere. The Mayfair branch continues to serve as the group’s flagship in London.
