Ladhar Bheinn

Ladhar Bheinn stands in the Knoydart peninsula, the most westerly Munro on the Scottish mainland. It rises above the sea lochs and wild glens of the Highland coast. The mountain’s steep slopes form a dramatic backdrop to the small settlement of Inverie. Barrisdale lies to the north-east, reached by rough tracks through remote country. Coire Dhorrcaill, a deep corrie on the north face, holds a hidden lochan fed by waterfalls. The subsidiary summit of Stob a’ Chearcaill adds a rocky challenge to the route. The mountain’s height and position make it a serious climb, yet routes exist for experienced walkers. A circuit from Barrisdale takes climbers past the corrie’s waterfalls and up the north ridge. Scrambling is needed near Stob a’ Chearcaill, where the ground steepens sharply. From Inverie the southern approach follows paths through birch and oak woods before the open slopes begin. Both routes reward effort with wide views over Knoydart’s sea lochs and ridges. On the summit a trig point marks the highest point, surrounded by shattered quartzite slabs. The view stretches from Skye to the Outer Hebrides on clear days. The cliffs drop steeply to the glen below, where golden eagles nest. The air carries the scent of heather and peat smoke from Inverie’s chimneys. The mountain’s isolation and scale give a sense of wilderness found in few other places.
