Burg Poding

Burg Poding once stood on a ridge at 840 metres above sea level on the Stadlberg slope near Miesbach. Its remains lie south of the village, about 500 metres east of St Agatha’s parish church in Agatharied. Archaeologists classify the site as a medieval stronghold built in the high and late Middle Ages. A three-metre-deep ditch cut across the eastern approach to protect the spur. Today only faint earthworks mark where walls once rose.

The castle is listed as a protected archaeological monument under the Bavarian monument authority. Its official record number is D-1-8236-0002, recognising it as part of Oberbayern’s vanished defences. Local historian Michael W. Weithmann included it in his 1995 survey of Upper Bavarian castles. The book’s third edition describes the exact location and surviving traces in detail.

Visitors walk a quiet forest path to the ridge where the castle once stood. The ground shows the line of the old ditch and scattered stones from the foundations. From the spur there are wide views over the valley towards Miesbach. The site is peaceful, with no modern buildings nearby. It offers a clear sense of how the medieval builders used the hill’s natural slope for defence.
