Blh Castle
Blh Castle stands as ruins on a wooded hill above the village of Veľký Blh in Lower Austria. The site overlooks a broad valley where the Blh stream winds through meadows and farmland. The remains include crumbling stone walls and a tall tower that once formed the keep. The castle once controlled an old trade route through the region. Its position gave it a clear view for miles in every direction. The castle’s history stretches back to the 13th century when Bailog, ancestor of the Balog family, ruled here. In 1405 the Balogs died out and the Seč family took over with help from Jan Jiskra of Brandýs. Husite forces seized the castle in 1463 before Štefan Rozgoň captured it for the king. The Sečs regained control in 1481 and kept it until 1646, when it passed to František Vešeléni. After the Rákóczi revolt ended in the early 18th century, the castle was left in ruins. Visitors walk along a short path through beech woods to reach the base of the tower. Inside the enclosure lie broken vaults and sections of curtain wall. The highest point offers wide views over the surrounding countryside. The quiet hilltop still carries the feel of a once-strategic stronghold.
