The Cavern Club

The Cavern Club is a music venue on Mathew Street in Liverpool. It opened in January 1957 as a jazz club and later became a centre for rock and roll in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The club is closely linked with Merseybeat and hosted early performances by the Beatles. It closed in 1973 during construction work and reopened in 1984 after being excavated. The original cellar was filled in but later rediscovered, and the club now stands in its rebuilt form. The Cavern Club played a key role in Liverpool’s music scene. It introduced skiffle groups and later became a platform for blues and beat bands. The Beatles made 292 appearances there between 1961 and 1963. Local bands like the Hideaways performed regularly and helped campaign for the club’s reopening. Other notable acts, including the Rolling Stones and Queen, played there in later years. Visitors find a small underground venue with a stage at one end and narrow walkways between brick arches. The walls are lined with memorabilia, including photos and records of past performances. The air carries the scent of the original cellar, where tropical fruit once ripened. A wall of fame honours bands with long histories at the club. The atmosphere remains lively, with live music most evenings.
