Liverpool Beatles Museum

The Liverpool Beatles Museum sits in a five-storey warehouse on Mathew Street, a short walk from the Cavern Club. The building itself dates from the early 19th century and is protected as a Grade II listed structure. Roag Best, half-brother of Pete Best, opened the museum in July 2018 after gathering thousands of items linked to the band. Three floors trace the Beatles’ career in clear stages: 1959–1962, 1963–1966, and 1967–1970. Over three hundred original objects are on display, with twelve hundred more kept in storage. Among the highlights are George Harrison’s Futurama guitar and John Lennon’s Sergeant Pepper medals. Visitors can also see the cello from ‘I Am the Walrus’, Pete Best’s Premier drum kit, and Paul McCartney’s bass speaker. Lennon’s custom egg chair and police log books from the New York City visit are on show too. A doll from the ‘All You Need Is Love’ Our World broadcast and gifts from Elvis Presley add to the collection. Celebrity visitors have left photos on the walls, including Noddy Holder, Nick Mason and Billy Bob Thornton. The museum’s top floor offers a quiet space to reflect on the displays. A new mural by Pete Best was added in 2020, brightening the entrance area. Outside, Mathew Street remains a lively spot with bars and music venues. The Cavern Club, where the Beatles played regularly, is just around the corner. Inside, the carefully arranged floors guide visitors through the band’s changing sound and image.
