Cùl Mòr

Cùl Mòr is a twin-summit mountain in Sutherland’s Inverpolly region, the higher top marking the area’s highest point. It stands apart from its smaller neighbour Cùl Beag and overlooks the more famous Suilven and Stac Pollaidh. The mountain’s slopes rise above a landscape of ridges, corries and boulder fields. Knockan Crag at NC189095 offers the usual starting point, where a stalker’s path begins the climb. From there the route follows Meallan Diomhain ridge, marked by cairns, before turning right over a broad saddle. The mountain commands wide views across Inverpolly and beyond. The final climb to the summit is steep and requires scrambling over rocks. An alternative route follows the corrie up to the col of Creag nan Calman on the south-west side. Both paths lead to the same high point, where the horizon stretches over Suilven and Stac Pollaidh. The ridge itself is narrow in places, with drops on either side. Visitors find open moorland, steep rock slabs and sweeping vistas. The summit ridge offers a clear sense of height and distance. Lower slopes hold patches of heather and bog, while higher ground is mostly bare stone. The air is often fresh and the silence broken only by wind. The mountain’s shape and isolation make it a quiet counterpart to busier neighbours.
