Donauzentrum

The Westfield Donau Zentrum is a large shopping and entertainment complex in Vienna’s 22nd district, Donaustadt. It stands near the Kagran U-Bahn station, with direct links to the U1 underground line. The centre opened in 1975 and has grown from 22,800 square metres to over 225,000 square metres today. A major expansion in 2010 added 28,000 square metres of retail space and a 38-metre sculpture called Sonnenstrahl. The front of the building is covered with LED panels that change colour. The centre also includes the Kitchen, a dining area with cinemas upgraded to IMAX technology. The centre is worth visiting for its sheer scale and variety. It contains over 262 shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, attracting around 19 million visitors each year. The owners, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, invested heavily in expansions and modernisations, including a €150 million upgrade between 2009 and 2010. The architectural design was handled by London firm Dunnett Craven and Vienna’s Franz Riedl. Despite two serious fires in 2019 and 2020, the centre reopened without harm to visitors. Inside, visitors find a wide range of shops, dining options and cinemas across two main areas: the Donau Zentrum and the Kitchen. The LED-covered facade near the U-Bahn station makes the entrance easy to spot. The Sonnenstrahl sculpture stands outside as a landmark. The centre is also served by tram line 25 and several city bus routes. With so much space and activity, it offers a busy environment for shopping and leisure.
