Schloss Seltenheim

Schloss Seltenheim stands on a hill west of Klagenfurt in Carinthia, a protected historic building reached by a winding approach. The present two-storey structure, long and irregular in plan, replaces a medieval castle first recorded in 1193. Its west front is broken by a three-storey tower, while the south-west corner carries a stone oriel on corbels. The castle’s interior preserves 17th-century spaces without later romantic additions. A small open courtyard is lined on both floors with arcades of plain pillars. The east side is guarded by a gate tower whose pointed entrance arch bears the Kometter-Fritsch coats of arms. A separate chapel, the Holy Trinity, was built in 1668 by Johann Friedrich von Windischgrätz and consecrated two years later. Inside the chapel the nave and choir are vaulted with barrel and lunettes, and a three-bay stone organ gallery rests on Tuscan columns. The high altar and side altars date from the same period. The whole ensemble, rebuilt in the 17th century and restored again in the 19th and 21st centuries, offers quiet walks through arcades and vaulted rooms.
