Nienstedten
Nienstedten is a quiet quarter in the Altona borough of Hamburg, set on the right bank of the Elbe river. Its northern edge meets the railway tracks of the city train, while to the west lies Blankenese and to the east Othmarschen. The quarter covers 4.4 square kilometres and has a population of around seven thousand. A small wildlife reservoir sits beside the Elbe in the public Hirschpark, which also offers tennis courts. The Elbchaussee runs through the area, home to the Honorary Consulate of Malawi at number 419. The quarter is recognised for its international institutions. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is based here, dealing with disputes over the sea. A part of the Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr, the German armed forces’ leadership academy, occupies the Clausewitz-Kaserne barracks. Two primary schools and one secondary school serve local families, while bus and city train services connect Nienstedten to the wider city. Visitors find a peaceful riverside setting with broad green spaces and well-kept paths. The Hirschpark provides a place for sport and wildlife watching beside the water. The Elbchaussee offers a scenic route through the quarter, lined with grand houses and consulates. The city train stations Hochkamp and Klein Flottbek make it easy to reach from central Hamburg. Away from busy roads, Nienstedten presents a calm residential atmosphere with a few notable institutions.
