Rissen

Rissen is a western district of Hamburg in the borough of Altona, bordering Schleswig-Holstein to the north, west and east and the Elbe river to the south. The quarter stretches along the riverbank, with a long narrow shape that runs from south to north. In the north lies Klövensteen, a large state forest bought by the local government in 1789 and still used for walking and riding. The forest was once part of the hunting grounds of Johan Cesar V. Godeffroy, a well-known shipowner in the 19th century. The quarter became part of Altona in 1927 and joined Hamburg in 1938 through the Greater Hamburg Act. Rissen has two elementary schools and two secondary schools, and is home to the Asklepios Westklinikum Hamburg, a general hospital with 452 beds. The hospital began as a Red Cross and freemasonry hospital and now includes nine departments. An honorary consulate of Haiti is also located in the area. Visitors find a quiet residential quarter with tree-lined streets and access to the Elbe riverbank. Klövensteen offers forest paths for walking, jogging and riding, while the Hamburger Golf-Club Falkenstein provides a championship golf course. The rapid transit S-Bahn line connects Rissen to Hamburg city centre and Hamburg Airport, making the area easy to reach.
