St. Nikolaus

St. Nikolaus is a small Roman Catholic church in the hamlet of Ganz, near Matrei in East Tyrol. Its earliest parts date from the 12th and 13th centuries, when builders used the plain Romanesque style. A simple rectangular nave leads to a square choir at the east end, and a tower was added a century later, giving the church its distinctive east-tower shape. The building is worth the journey for its layered history and well-preserved art. The choir still shows Romanesque masonry from the 12th century, while the nave was rebuilt in the 14th century with a net vault and an upstairs choir reached by side staircases. Inside, fragments of medieval frescoes survive, some hidden for centuries beneath layers of whitewash before being cleaned in the late 19th century. Visitors step into a quiet space where every wall tells a story. Below, the lower choir holds a painted cycle of the Earthly Paradise, four scenes that begin with Eve’s creation and end with Adam and Eve at work. Above, the upper choir vault is covered by a vivid picture of the Heavenly Jerusalem, its city gates guarded by the twelve apostles and its corners filled with the four evangelists. Outside, a 16th-century fresco of Saint Christopher watches over the north side of the tower, while a 14th-century Crucifixion scene marks the west entrance.
