The Dispensary

The Dispensary is a Georgian town house in Monmouth, Wales, built in the mid-18th century with early 19th-century additions. It stands in St James Square, opposite the Catalpa tree, and is surrounded by later attractive façades. The building was listed at Grade II in 1952. Architectural historian John Newman describes it as the "one substantial eighteenth century house" in St James Street. A dispensary opened here in 1857 and became the Monmouth Hospital and Dispensary in 1868, closing in 1903. It is one of 24 buildings on the Monmouth Heritage Trail, marked by a ceramic blue plaque. The Dispensary played an important role in local healthcare, benefitting mainly the poor though not those on parish relief. Sir James Paget, Surgeon Extraordinary to Queen Victoria, inspected the premises in 1873 and praised its convenience, ventilation and arrangement. In 1868, the annual cost of each bed was about £40, funded by donations from Monmouth’s banks and individuals. Major benefactors included John E. W. Rolls, who donated £1,000 and covered the cost of "The Hendre Bed" in perpetuity. In 1876–1877, the Dispensary treated over 1,600 outpatients and had 60 inpatients. After the Dispensary closed in 1903, the building housed a private school run by French Sisters from 1907, offering lessons in French, music, painting and general education. Later, it became a children’s home, continuing in this role until the end of the 20th century. The building retains its historical significance and is part of Monmouth’s heritage trail. Its role in local healthcare and education reflects the town’s social history. The Dispensary remains a notable example of Georgian architecture in Monmouth.
