Kloster Hane

Kloster Hane stands in the quiet Donnersbergkreis village of Bolanden, where a Romanesque basilica and its surrounding buildings survive as a single ensemble. The church, once dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was begun in 1129 by Werner I of Bolanden and staffed with Augustinian canons from Springiersbach. Over the centuries the site passed to the Premonstratensian nuns, changed shape in the Gothic period, and later became a farm before returning to private hands. The community grew wealthy through gifts from nobles and kings, reaching fifty sisters by the mid-13th century. Among its most famous figures was Christina of Hane, a mystic venerated as blessed and possibly sister of King Adolf of Nassau. In 1171 Hildegard of Bingen visited both Hane and Rothenkirchen, leaving behind letters that were later quoted in the Reformation. The buildings still show traces of these events: Romanesque piers, Gothic windows with tracery, and a late-medieval sacrament house. Today the former church serves as a concert and festival hall, its flat ceiling replacing the lost vault while Romanesque arches and Gothic windows remain visible. A small park on the old cemetery grounds hosts events, and the surrounding walls hold medieval tombstones and a Baroque memorial. The ensemble offers a quiet place to walk among the remains of a once-busy double monastery, where stonework and stories still speak of its past.
