The Backenstein is a mountain standing 1,772 metres above sea level in the Toten Gebirge range of the Austrian Alps. It rises about 1,000 metres above the shores of Grundlsee and is known for its striking 600-metre-high rock face. The mountain overlooks the village of Grundlsee, which sits at 732 metres, making it the community’s local peak.

Climbers follow the marked Almbergweg trail from the village centre up to the Backensteinsattel at 1,600 metres. From there the route continues on path 236 to the summit, a three-hour walk. The summit cross stands roughly 250 metres south of the highest point, offering a final short scramble.

The route passes through alpine meadows and open rock before reaching the summit ridge. Views stretch across Grundlsee and the surrounding peaks of the Toten Gebirge. The steep rock face on the northern side dominates the skyline as walkers approach from the valley.
