St John's Church

St John’s Church stands in the village of Llandenny, Monmouthshire, a Grade I listed building in the Perpendicular style. Built of Old Red Sandstone, it dates from the twelfth century with later additions in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The nave belongs to the twelfth century, the chancel to the fourteenth, and the roofs and tower were added in the fifteenth. A well-preserved Norman window survives from the earliest period. The church is worth visiting for its layered history and fine craftsmanship. In the 1860s John Prichard and John Pollard Seddon restored the building, and G E Halliday carried out further work in 1900–01. Arts and Crafts chancel rails were installed during the later campaign. The church also contains memorials to members of the Somerset family, who lived at nearby Cefntilla Court. Inside, visitors find a twelfth-century nave with a Norman window and fifteenth-century roofs and tower. The chancel, rebuilt in the fourteenth century, leads to Arts and Crafts rails added in 1900–01. Sunday services continue the building’s long tradition of worship.
