Church of St Michael and All Angels

The Church of St Michael and All Angels stands in the quiet village of Gwernesney, Monmouthshire, Wales. It is a Grade I listed building, meaning it is recognised as a structure of exceptional historic interest. Originally built in the 13th century, most of the visible work dates from the 15th century. The church is constructed from Old Red Sandstone, a common local material. In 2017, responsibility for the church passed to the Friends of Friendless Churches, a charity that cares for at-risk historic buildings. The church’s interior holds a late medieval screen described as being of particular interest. The church register records baptisms and burials from 1758 and marriages from 1757, making it a useful source for local family history. The double bell gable was restored in 1853–4 by John Pollard Seddon, a noted architect of the time. The building’s simple, sturdy design reflects its long use as a place of worship. Visitors find a small but atmospheric church with plain stone walls and a tiled roof. The late medieval screen divides the nave from the chancel, adding a sense of age and craftsmanship.
