The Jaun Valley lies in southern Austria’s Carinthia region, where the Karawanks mountains rise steeply on the southern side and gentler hills roll northwards towards the Drava. The valley’s name comes from the Roman settlement of Juenna, though its modern German form ‘Jaun’ has been used for centuries. Local dialect still carries traces of Slovene speech from the time when this borderland mixed languages and cultures. The Drava marks the northern edge, its banks lined with poplars and willows. In winter the higher slopes hold snow long after the valley has thawed. The valley’s quiet roads make it a good place for cycling or gentle walks without crowds. Visitors find a landscape shaped by farming and forestry rather than grand monuments. The villages have simple churches with plain white walls and dark wooden doors. Paths lead up the lower hills, offering views across the valley towards the Karawanks. The Drava’s gravel banks are popular for picnics in warm weather. At dusk the light turns the meadows golden and the mountains purple. The valley feels like a place where time moves slowly, where the past lingers in names and dialects rather than in stone.
