Filialkirche hll. Johannes und Paulus, Gablern, Eberndorf
The small Roman Catholic church in Gaberln stands in the village of Eberndorf in Carinthia. First mentioned in 1454, it is dedicated to the early Christian martyrs John and Paul. The building began as a simple Romanesque structure but later received Baroque additions. Inside, the nave has a painted wooden ceiling from 1688 by Georg Matthäus Altendorffer, showing the Annunciation. Frescoes in the choir, uncovered in 1979, date from the late 13th or early 14th century. The high altar of 1617 holds neobaroque statues of the two saints and a painted image of the Veil of Veronica. The right side altar features a statue of St James the Elder and an image of St Lawrence. Other furnishings include statues of St Agatha, St Alexius and a processional staff bearing the figure of St Barbara. The church’s interior combines Romanesque, Baroque and neobaroue elements in a quiet rural setting.
