Großer Hengst
The Großer Hengst stands at 2,159 metres in the Rottenmann Tauern range of the Austrian Alps. It rises from a short eastern ridge of the Kleiner Bösenstein, a higher neighbour to the west. The southern slopes drop steeply into the Pölsen valley, while the east faces Hohentauern saddle at 1,274 metres and the north slopes lead down to the shore of Großer Scheibelsee. Two marked footpaths, both numbered 902, reach the summit from different starting points. One route begins at Edelrautehütte hut and follows the ridge eastward. The other starts from Perwurzpolster saddle and climbs through alpine meadows before joining the same ridge. On the summit visitors find a modest cross and wide views across the Rottenmann Tauern. To the south the Pölsen valley stretches below, while to the north the blue surface of Großer Scheibelsee reflects the surrounding peaks. On clear days the distant peaks of the Niedere Tauern can be seen rising above the horizon.
