Holy Name of Mary Church

The parish church of Wippenham stands in the village of Wippenham in Upper Austria. It is a late-medieval church dedicated to the Name of Mary. The building is protected as a listed monument. The church dates back to at least 1320, with parts of the tower possibly from the 13th century. The nave was vaulted and the choir rebuilt in the late 15th century. After a fire in 1811 damaged the tower, repairs were made. The exterior has been restored several times, most recently in 2014. The church’s architecture reflects its long history, blending late-Gothic and earlier styles. Inside, the high altar from 1659 shows the influence of the Zürn sculptors. A Gothic Madonna statue from around 1500 stands nearby. The south aisle holds a side altar with a figure of Saint Margaret by Johann Franz Schwanthaler. The pulpit dates to the late 17th century, and baroque statues include a bishop identified as Saint Kilian. The organ, built in 1894 by Leopold Breinbauer, has a neo-Gothic case with eight stops. Four bells hang in the tower, one from the 16th century bearing an image of Saint Sebastian.
