Filialkirche hl. Leonhard, Latschach, Hermagor

The late-medieval church of St Leonhard stands in a clearing above the village of Latschach in Carinthia. Built in the 15th century, it belongs to the Mellweg parish and is surrounded by dense forest. The building’s clean lines show the late-Gothic style: a three-bay nave, a single-bay choir ending in three eighths, and a north tower with basket-arched sound openings topped by a pointed helm. Inside, a net-ribbed vault covers the nave, while the choir has a plain barrel vault with lunettes. A wooden gallery of the 1700s runs along the west wall, and a pointed arch separates nave from choir. Outside, a wide porch shelters the 1740 wooden door and a stone offertory table, while faded frescoes depict local saints. Inside, the high altar of about 1640 shows St Leonhard flanked by Sts Andrew and Lawrence, with a Madonna above. The side altars, carved in 1772 by Joseph Kapfer, hold figures of Sts Ulrich, Stephen, Sebastian, Florian and Wolfgang. A pointed door in the tower base leads to the sacristy, and the whole interior is lit by basket-arched windows.
