Filialkirche hl. Kunigunde, Nampolach, Hermagor

The late-medieval church stands on a low hill above the village of Nampolach, a few kilometres from Hermagor in the Gail valley. It is dedicated to Saint Cunigunde and belongs to the parish of Mellweg. In 1521 the Bishop of Bamberg authorised the replacement of an old wooden chapel with the present stone building. The nave is a single rectangular space, the choir ends in a six-sided apse, and a square tower rises on the north side of the choir. The tower has two-light round-headed sound-openings and a steep pyramid roof. A row of open stone piers shelters the richly moulded pointed west door. Inside, a flat barrel vault with lunettes rests on round shafts, and a narrow pointed arch frames the view into the choir, which has the same vaulting. The high altar dates from about 1650 and consists of a main aedicule on a plinth topped by a smaller aedicule crowned with a cherub’s head and scrolls. Twisted columns are carved with grapevines and bold C-scrolls of strapwork. The right-hand altar, of the same date, mirrors the high altar and holds a figure of Saint Nicholas and a painting of a bishop in its upper zone. The left-hand altar was added around 1725.
