Black Mixen

Black Mixen is a subsidiary summit of Rhos Fawr in the Radnor Forest in mid-Wales. The summit itself is a large peat bog plateau marked by a cairn. Nearby stands a radio transmitter and its small building. To the east lies Bache Hill, while the Black Mountains rise to the south. The Great Rhos plateau stretches west from the summit. It is the only Nuttall—a hill between 2,000 and 2,999 feet with a relative height of at least 15 metres—to have a communications mast on its top. The cairn at the summit is likely to date from the Bronze Age. Most other peaks in the area also show similar burial mounds. Visitors find a wide, open moorland surface softened by peat and heather. The radio mast and its building add a modern contrast to the ancient cairn. Views stretch across the Radnor Forest and towards the Black Mountains. The air is often still, broken only by the hum of the transmitter. The sense of space and silence makes it a quiet place to stand.
