Rhos Fawr

Rhos Fawr is a mountain summit in the Radnor Forest, a group of hills in Mid Wales north of New Radnor village. It stands as the highest point in the Radnor Forest and the historic county top of Radnorshire. The local rocks are sedimentary shales and mudstones with some Silurian limestone. The summit reaches 660 metres above sea level. The summit sits on a broad heathery plateau separated from Black Mixen by Harvey Dingle’s cwm. To the west lies Drygarn Fawr and Gorllwyn, to the northwest Plynlimon, to the north Beacon Hill and Clun Forest, and to the south the Black Mountains. A trig point marks the summit and serves as a useful landmark for walkers crossing the wide, featureless plateau. Visitors find open heather moorland and wide views across central Wales. The plateau offers little shelter but clear sightlines to surrounding peaks. Harvey Dingle’s shallow valley cuts the plateau in the east. The summit trig point stands out against the skyline, guiding walkers across the open ground.
