Arena Theatre

The Arena Theatre stands on Wulfruna Street in Wolverhampton, part of the University of Wolverhampton’s city campus. It is a small professional venue with a main auditorium seating 150 people. The theatre serves both touring shows and local community groups. It shares its space with students and visiting performers. The building began as a workshop before becoming a fully equipped theatre in 1967. The theatre was founded by Philip Tilstone, the first drama lecturer at what was then Wolverhampton College of Technology. He worked with Dr Percy Young, the college’s director of music, to create a space for student and community performances. Kevin O’Sullivan later managed the theatre for over twenty years until his retirement. It became a key venue for touring companies from across the UK and beyond. Prestigious groups such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and Kneehigh Theatre performed there regularly. Today, the Arena Theatre hosts more than 200 public performances each year. A £2 million refurbishment in 1999 transformed the old gym into the Tilstone Studio. The theatre now offers improved facilities and better access. It remains a vital resource for students, local groups and touring artists. The programme includes theatre, dance, live art and music.
