St George's Church

St George’s Church stands in Wolverhampton as a Grade II listed former parish church built between 1828 and 1830 by James Morgan. The church follows the Grecian style of architecture in the Doric order, with a plain brick exterior cased in Tixall stone and iron window frames. Inside, the building is light and spacious, measuring 127 feet long and 67 feet wide, with iron pillars supporting galleries on three sides. The nave and galleries include free seating for 1,332 people, alongside 706 pews, designed to accommodate the whole congregation. A painted window by Henderson of Birmingham sits above the altar, funded by local subscriptions. The vestry and robing room flank the altar at the east end, completing the symmetrical layout. The church’s history reflects its role in the community and its later transformation. Consecrated in 1830 by the Bishop of Lichfield, it served as a parish church until becoming redundant in 1978. After standing empty, it was converted into a Sainsbury’s Supermarket in 1986, a rare reuse for a church building. The organ, built by F.H. Browne of Deal in 1897, adds another layer to its heritage, though it is no longer in place. The church’s construction cost £10,268, largely funded by local subscriptions and a grant from the Parliamentary Commissioners. Today, the former church building remains a striking landmark in Wolverhampton. Its Doric columns and ironwork still define the interior, even after retail use altered the space. The painted window above the altar survives as a reminder of its original purpose. The building’s size and design reflect the ambitions of early 19th-century church architecture. Its conversion into a supermarket preserved it from demolition, keeping its structure intact for new uses. The site now stands as a notable example of adaptive reuse in urban history.
