Maesmor Hall Castle Mound

Tomen Maesmor is a medieval earthwork mound in the Conwy valley near Llangwm. It stands on farmland without the usual surrounding defensive wall called a bailey. Most such mounds in Wales were raised between the late 11th and the second half of the 12th century from soil and stone, often surrounded by a ditch. The Normans brought this style of fortification from France and Welsh lords adopted it. Cadw, Wales’ historic environment service, keeps the site on its list under reference DE149. The greatest concentration of these mounds appears along the historic borderlands known as the Marches. Visitors find a grassy knoll rising gently above flat fields. The ditch that once circled the mound is still faintly visible in places. From the top there are wide views over the Conwy valley and towards the Clwydian Range. The quiet countryside around the mound shows no other medieval remains nearby.
