Schloss Donnersbach
Schloss Donnersbach rises above the village of Donnersbach on a steep hillside in the Steiermark. The fortress began as a medieval stronghold founded after 1530 by Achatz Schrott. In 1589 his descendant Hans Adam Schrott enlarged the site, adding a gateway marked with the date and a pair of coupled windows above the entrance. The castle’s two rectangular wings meet at a right angle, joined by an arched gallery. A stone column divides the paired windows over the gate, giving the façade its distinctive 16th-century look. Since 2017 the building has shared listed status with the nearby parish church, protecting both from alteration. Inside, visitors follow stone passages between the wings and climb to the gallery for views across the valley. The courtyard below shows the steep drop on which the castle stands. The surrounding woods and the distant church spire complete the scene.
