Reisseck Mountain Railway

The Reißeck-Höhenbahn was a narrow-gauge mountain railway in the Hohe Tauern range of Carinthia. It climbed from Schoberboden up to the Seenplateau at 2,250 metres. The line ran for 3,359 metres, most of it inside a 2,130-metre tunnel. Built in 1953 to serve the Reißeck-Kreuzeck power station, it later carried tourists. The Reisseck Mountain Railway Company opened public services in 1965. Trains once carried 68 passengers through the high Alps without using a rack section. At the top stood the Berghotel Reißeck, where visitors could stop. A branch line once served Hochalmsee and Radlsee, ending near 2,400 metres. Heavy rain in 2014 destroyed part of the track, and the railway closed soon after.
