St Llibio's Church

St Llibio’s Church once stood in the small Anglesey settlement of Llanllibio. Founded in the sixth century by the monk Llibio, it served a handful of bondmen working the land. The church was built on an old road between London and Holyhead, about 1.3 kilometres from Bodedern. It was dedicated to St Llibio, a disciple of St Cybi, and its feast day was marked on 28 February. The name Llanllibio comes from the Welsh word for church, ‘llan’, and the saint’s name. The church closed in the seventeenth century as Llanllibio’s population dwindled. By 1776 it was already in ruins, and plans to rebuild it in the nineteenth century never took shape. The historian Angharad Llwyd noted in 1833 that locals worshipped instead at St Edern’s Church in Bodedern. A 1937 survey found only the churchyard wall’s foundations, and a 2006 guide described ‘tiny traces’ of the building. A memorial slate now marks where the church once stood. Visitors today find a quiet field with little visible trace of the church. A low stone slab stands in the grass to show where St Llibio’s once rose. The site lies near the old London–Holyhead road, close to Bodedern. The surrounding Anglesey landscape is flat and open, with few signs of the vanished settlement. The memorial is small and unadorned, a quiet reminder of a place that has almost faded from memory.
