St Edern's Church

St Edern’s Church stands in the village of Bodedern on Anglesey, a small settlement about eight kilometres from Holyhead. The present building dates mainly from the 14th century, though parts were rebuilt in the 19th century. A 6th-century inscribed stone lies inside, marking the site’s early Christian past. The church also holds a medieval font and wooden panels from Jesus College, Oxford. Three pieces of 19th-century silverware remain, while a 16th-century chalice has been lost. The church is notable for its medieval fabric and later restorations. Architect Henry Kennedy oversaw much of the 19th-century work, adding a chancel, transept and porch. The nave walls were rebuilt, yet some original windows were reused. A gallery at the west end rests on oak beams, one bearing the date 1777. The Grade II* listing recognises its historical importance and preserved character. Inside, the nave measures about eighteen metres by five metres. A Victorian arch separates the raised chancel from the nave. The east window shows the Ascension in 19th-century glass, while a transept window depicts St Edern. The porch roof contains reused medieval wood, and the churchyard holds a simple stone cross. The building remains in use for worship within the Church in Wales.
