Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre

The Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre stands in Workington, Cumbria, inside a Grade II listed building that once housed a library and lecture hall. Andrew Carnegie donated £7,500 for its construction, and the foundation stone was laid in 1903 by the mayor. After opening in 1904, the lecture hall became a cinema in 1909 before being converted into a theatre in the 1960s. Today it remains a charity-run venue offering live music, dance, classes and a café. The Carnegie Development Group formed in 2011 to secure the theatre’s future and later became the Friends of the Carnegie. In 2015 the Carnegie Theatre Trust took over its operation, with a board of directors managing a small paid staff. Barbara Cannon has chaired the trust since early 2023, following Lee Martin-White. The centre continues to host regular events and support local arts. Visitors find a working theatre with a varied programme of performances and workshops. The café area is open six days a week, and spaces are available for meetings and group activities. The building’s heritage and ongoing cultural role make it a focal point for Workington and the surrounding districts.
