Panorama Museum Salzburg
The Panorama Museum in Salzburg sits in the Neue Residenz on the city’s main square. It holds a vast circular painting of Salzburg and its surroundings as seen from Hohensalzburg fortress around 1825. The work was created by Johann Michael Sattler with help from Friedrich Loos and Johann Joseph Schindler. The Sattler panorama is one of the few surviving large historical city views from the early 19th century. Between 1829 and 1839 Sattler toured with the painting across Europe, showing it in cities from Vienna to Paris. His efforts made him Salzburg’s first honorary citizen and an early promoter of the city. Inside the museum the 25-metre-long painting is surrounded by twenty-four Kosmoramen. These big landscape scenes were made by Sattler and, in greater number, by his son Hubert Sattler. The collection spans travels from North Africa to the North Cape and from Canada to Cuba.
