8 Bishopsgate stands in the City of London’s financial quarter, a 51-storey glass tower that reaches 204 metres. It occupies the corner of Bishopsgate and Leadenhall Street, close to two taller skyscrapers. The site once housed the headquarters of Barings Bank, which collapsed in 1995 after centuries of trading. Barings had occupied the old 79-metre building since 1806, expanding it several times before demolition began in 2018. Construction of the new tower started in 2019 and finished in 2023, making it London’s eleventh-tallest structure. The building’s design uses warm materials such as wood and marble to create a welcoming interior. Architects aimed for a ‘visually striking’ appearance that fits the wave of high-rise development along Bishopsgate. Rising demand for office space in the City drove the project forward. The tower’s most notable feature is a free viewing gallery called The Look0ut on the 50th floor. Visitors can reach the gallery by lift and enjoy unobstructed views across the capital. Inside, the floors are arranged for modern commercial use, with large open-plan spaces. The materials and finishes were chosen to give a sense of quality and comfort. Outside, the tower’s height and position make it a landmark on the skyline. The surrounding streets are busy with financial activity, adding to the urban atmosphere. The free gallery offers a quiet space to pause and look out over the city.
