Seeache

The Seeache is a short river in Upper Austria that carries water from the Mondsee to the Attersee. It begins at a regulating weir near See am Mondsee and flows east for three kilometres before splitting into two branches at its mouth in Unterach. The smaller left branch was built by people to guide part of the flow. Rafters enjoy the Seeache because it is lively yet manageable, rated between difficulty levels one and two. Its water stays very clean, holding the highest water-quality grades one and two. Along the banks, anglers often spot perch, chub, dace, roach and other fish that travel upstream from the Attersee to lay eggs in the gravel beds. A century ago, electric trams ran beside the river, linking the lakes’ steamers with the Salzkammergut local railway until 1949. Today the old trackbed forms part of a walking and cycling route that follows the river through quiet lakeside scenery.
