Schwarzenberg

The Schwarzenberg rises in the Osterhorngruppe, a compact massif where the southern edge of Salzburg meets Ebenau and Puch bei Hallein. Its summit, 1 334 m above sea level, straddles the municipal boundary between Ebenau and Elsbethen and is the highest point of both villages. Below the south-eastern slope the Wiestal reservoir collects water for hydro-electric power, its calm waters contrasting with the slopes above. The name Salzkammergut-Berge can mislead, because these heights lie close to Salzburg and Hallein, near the historic Dürrnberg salt workings of the Prince-Archbishopric. They owe more to the Fürsterzbistum’s own salt than to the Habsburg Salzkammer centred on Bad Ischl and Hallstatt. The massif’s modest scale and proximity to the city make it an accessible yet little-known upland. A network of forest tracks and alpine paths climbs from Puch and Elsbethen to the summit, where views stretch north to the Salzburg basin and south across the Osterhorngruppe. Mountain-bike routes follow the same lines, returning past the reservoir and through mixed woodland. The slopes are gentle enough for walkers to linger, while the reservoir shore offers a quiet place to rest before the final ascent.
