Gurlspitze

The Gurlspitze stands in the Salzkammergut range, its sharp pyramid shape dividing the southern and eastern outskirts of Salzburg. The municipalities of Elsbethen, Koppl and Ebenau share its slopes, the summit marking the point where their borders meet. At 1,158 metres it is one of the highest points for all three communities. A new summit cross and a first-aid box stocked with strong spirits were added in 2003. The peak offers wide views over the Salzach valley and the northern limestone foothills. To the north the Gaisberg ridge rises, providing another clear landmark on the skyline. A broad forest track leads walkers to the top in about an hour from the southern side. The final metres are over open ground, giving a final stretch of open-air climbing. On clear days the Hohe Tauern can be seen far to the south-west. The summit itself is small and rocky, with room only for the cross and the red box.
