Donaghadee lighthouse
Donaghadee Lighthouse stands at the entrance to the harbour in the small town of Donaghadee on the County Down coast in Northern Ireland. The town itself has long been known for its safe haven for ships, with records of a harbour dating back to the 17th century. The present harbour was rebuilt in the early 19th century under the direction of engineers from the Rennie family, who had also worked on major bridges in London. The harbour’s two stone piers curve out to sea, meeting at a narrow entrance that keeps the water calm inside. Limestone from Anglesey was used to build the inner faces of the piers, giving them a polished finish that still stands out today. The steps along the piers are set at sharp angles to resist the wear of waves and boots. The lighthouse itself was built to guide ships safely into the harbour, especially as steam packets began using the port in the 19th century. It is a solid stone tower that has stood watch over the Irish Sea for generations. The harbour’s outer slopes were formed from rock blasted from the seabed, while the inner faces show fine ashlar masonry. The piers converge at the outer end, creating a harbour mouth just over forty-five metres wide. At low tide, the water inside remains deep enough for large vessels to moor safely. Visitors to Donaghadee can walk along the piers and see the lighthouse up close. The stonework of the harbour is impressive, with carefully dressed blocks and strong, angled steps. The view from the end of the pier stretches across the Irish Sea towards Scotland on clear days. The town’s harbour remains a working port, with fishing boats and small vessels coming and going. The lighthouse stands as a quiet guardian, its light still guiding mariners after many years.
