Mount Stewart
Mount Stewart is a 19th-century house and garden on the east shore of Strangford Lough, a few miles outside Newtownards in County Down. It was the Irish seat of the Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry, and reflects their leading role in British and Irish social and political life. The house stands near Greyabbey and was originally called Mount Pleasant. The Stewarts were prominent Presbyterians who built their fortunes through trade and marriage. Their political influence grew as they gained titles and offices in the 18th and 19th centuries. The house is closely linked to key figures like Viscount Castlereagh, Britain’s Foreign Secretary at the Congress of Vienna. Another notable owner, the 7th Marquess, attempted private diplomacy with Hitler’s Germany. The interiors feature portraits of Napoleon and chairs embroidered for delegates at the Congress of Vienna. The gardens and grounds also hold a memorial tower to the 3rd Marquess, raised with help from Emperor Napoleon III. The family’s political and social legacy is evident throughout the estate. Visitors find a grand neoclassical house with eleven bays and a large central portico. Inside, rooms reflect the family’s political career, including Castlereagh’s furnishings and portraits. The gardens are designed to complement the house, with terraces and planted borders. The surrounding Strangford Lough offers scenic views and a peaceful setting. The estate’s history is visible in its architecture and landscape, from the 18th-century origins to the 19th-century expansions.
