Campbell Park

Campbell Park sits at the heart of Central Milton Keynes, forming the city’s largest green space. Named after Jock Campbell, the first chairman of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation, it stretches from the main retail and entertainment district down to the Grand Union Canal. A footbridge over Marlborough Street links the park to the town centre, while plans exist to connect it to a new Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway. Historic England has listed the park at Grade II for its historic interest and innovative design. Pevsner’s Architectural Guides once called it the largest and most imaginative park laid out in Britain during the 20th century. The park’s most striking feature is the Milton Keynes Rose, a public space near the business district designed for commemoration and reflection. It includes a Cenotaph and markers for historical events, and became a gathering place for floral tributes after Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022. East of the Rose, the Belvedere leads to the Light Pyramid, a sculptural beacon by Liliane Lijn, standing on an elevated embankment. The park also hosts the Events Plateau and amphitheatre, used for community gatherings and festivals like IF: Milton Keynes and India Day. Concerts by artists such as Steps and Paloma Faith have taken place in the amphitheatre. At the eastern edge of the park lies the Campbell Park Cricket Ground with its pavilion, close to the Grand Union Canal. Nearby stands the headquarters of the Milton Keynes Parks Trust. The park’s design links the city centre to a wide stretch of parkland reaching the Ouse Valley, forming one continuous countryside area. A prehistoric-style mound rises near the shopping centre, offering sweeping views over Willen Lake and the surrounding parkland. The park’s scale and layout reflect its role as a vital green heart for Milton Keynes.
