Achsel

The Achsel is a 2,673-metre peak in the Venediger Group of the Hohe Tauern range. It stands on the Umbal ridge in East Tyrol, north-west of the village of Prägraten. The mountain rises from the east ridge of the Hohe Kreuz, which slopes down towards the Umbal valley. Though not a major climbing objective, it is the only named summit over 2,000 metres on this ridge. The Umbal valley below is known for its steep, narrow gorges and cascading streams. The Achsel’s modest height and gentle slopes make it a straightforward outing for fit walkers. It offers wide views across the Venediger Group and down into the Umbal valley. The route follows the east ridge of the Hohe Kreuz, a broad, grassy crest that requires no technical climbing. Local guides recommend it as a good introduction to high Alpine ridges. The surrounding area is part of the Hohe Tauern National Park, recognised for its glaciers and alpine meadows. On the summit, a small metal cross marks the highest point. The ridge walk provides long, unbroken views of the Venediger peaks to the south. Below, the Umbal valley shows its steep walls and rushing waters. The contrast between the open summit and the narrow valley below is striking. The route back follows the same ridge, giving a steady descent without difficult ground.
