Burg Röthekopf
Burg Röthekopf stands on a 502-metre hill three kilometres north of Bad Säckingen in the Black Forest foothills. The site is a prehistoric hillfort, built as a defensive spur with a bank and ditch cutting off the southern approach. Only faint traces of the original walls and ditches remain today. Archaeologists have found stone tools from the Stone Age among the ruins. The shape of the fortification suggests it dates to that early period. The fort may have seen later use in the Middle Ages, though no medieval finds have been confirmed. Its builders chose the hilltop for its commanding view over the surrounding valleys. The steep slopes on three sides made the site naturally strong. A single low rampart once blocked the gentler northern slope. Experts believe the fort was mainly a refuge for nearby communities. Visitors walk a quiet woodland path to reach the summit. The remains consist of grass-covered banks and shallow ditches barely a metre high. From the crest there are long views across the Rhine plain to the Swiss Alps. The site is peaceful, with only the sound of wind in the trees. Few tourists come here, so the atmosphere feels undisturbed. The hill itself is covered in beech and oak woodland typical of the region.
