Innsbruck Town Hall

Innsbruck Town Hall stands in the heart of the city, replacing an earlier medieval building from 1358. The present structure began as a hotel donated by wholesaler Leonhard Lang in 1897 before becoming the city’s administrative centre. During the Second World War the building suffered heavy damage and was rebuilt in 1947–48. A later extension created a unified complex around the original town hall. The 1996 international competition was won by French architect Dominique Perrault. His design added a restaurant, hotel and shopping arcade called Rathausgallerien. A public–private partnership delivered 6,000 square metres of office space alongside the restored old town hall. The complex now houses both municipal departments and commercial tenants. Visitors find a modern glass-and-steel addition wrapped around the historic core. The Rathausgallerien offers shops and dining under a glazed roof. Inside, the restored council chambers and public areas retain their original character. Outside, the building opens onto the city’s main square, linking old and new Innsbruck.
