Kath. Pfarrkirche hl. Nikolaus

The Catholic parish church of St Nicholas stands on a slight rise at the southern edge of Niedernondorf, a village in the Waldhausen commune of Lower Austria’s Zwettl district. Across the lane from the church rises the old Schloss Niedernondorf, giving the building a commanding outlook over the surrounding fields. The church has been listed as a protected monument since the 20th century. The present structure dates largely from the 1670s, when Georg Wolff drew up plans for a new church while preserving the medieval tower. The tower itself still shows its 14th-century core, while the rest of the façade and the spire were completed between 1674 and 1676. The church remained under the patronage of the local castle owners until the 1970s, linking its history to the estate across the road. Inside, the short nave is divided into two bays covered by a barrel vault on sturdy pilasters. The rectangular choir is set back slightly and joined on its north side by a sacristy. The high altar, made in 1675 by Hans Bair, carries a painted scene of the Assumption of Mary and statues of St Nicholas and St Paul by Mathias Sturmberger. A Gothic Madonna from about 1420, restored in 1966, is kept in safe keeping. The organ, built in 1840 by Benedikt Latzl, hangs above the west gallery, and two historic bells cast in 1703 and 1735 still sound for services.
